Te Tuhi

On the 3rd of December Class 4 went on a trip to Te tuhi which is a Art Gallery in Pakuragna.  We went inside, had a seat and watched sketch-up builds while waiting for our tutor Jeremy to come. After a while our he arrived and told us to follow him to the activity room to make tapa.

Tapa is a cloth made out of bark and is dyed earthy colours. The tapa we were making was to have symbols of hobbies, friends or family. We went inside and Jeremy gave us a sheet of paper. There were 4 squares on it. We were told to crunch the paper to get lots of crinkles on the paper. After, he told us to rub he red crayon on the four boxes. This This highlitec the texture of the crinkles. The next step was to dye the paper brown. Simple enough so I did it and it looked so realistic! But we weren't finished.

We still had to draw our symbols of hobbies and family to it! I added a computer because I love video games, a book because I love to read, a cricket ball because I like sports and a house for family. Finally we had to dye the boxes 2 different colours. I did 2 colours facing each other diagonally.

After we had finished our tapa we headed to look at the exhibits. The theme of the exibition was about pacific water but it was mostly a big  blur what Jeremy said because I was to busy looking at the paintings or movies. After an enjoyable afternoon it was time to go back we grabbed our pictures and hopped on the bus to go back to school.

Extension symbols movie

This Term year 7/8 Extension we learned about symbols because of our school topic Art Attack. Here is a movie that I made to show what I have drawn and learnt. Symbols are cultural things which means they belong to your country. I drew the greenstone and Maori flag for my 1/2 NZ who's 2nd culture is maori. I drew 2 lions because i am  my 1/2 Netherlands.

Aspiration meeting

The 5 intermediate classes filled into the street and sat down. Mr Burt and 4 others came in. I had no clue what  their names were. (apart from Mr Burt.) Mr Burt says that the main speaker for this event is called Andrew Patterson. He starts off by saying his welcomes and then he talks about a kid who was very shy. Now he’s a public speaker who gets paid for speaking at conferences.

He introduces the next speaker called Andrew Samuels. He shows a slide on the tv that said “To Mihiako Hoki” At first no one could figure it out. Then Andrew said that it was “you are awesome!”

He talks about when you would use it and how to say it properly. Then he advances to the next slide. It says “Your Past Does Not Have To Determine Your Future.” Meaning what happens in the past does not have to affect what you do in the future.’

Next was another male called Paula Fakalaka. He comes in and says some facts about himself then says “don’t be afraid to take risks.” Only if there good risks not bad risks because bad risks have the risk of killing you. We talked about what was a good risk and what was a bad risk until it was time for the female to come.

The female was called Amelia Unufe and she was underestimated at school because her 2 older brothers both flunked out and everyone thought that she was going to as well. She said that it wouldn’t affect her and she would continue doing the best she could. Thats why her thing to remember would be don’t let “peoples expectations stop you”.

We ended it off by singing our school karakia Powhiri Mai. We sang our hearts out to the 4 people that came. We gave them our thanks and gave Andrew Patterson a box of chocolates for being the host of this special event.

Maths Term 4 Week 7

207 miles per hour world record

A French man set a new record for fastest speed on wheels. He used a rocket powered bicycle to beat the last record which is actually pretty funny. It took 4.8 seconds to get to the speed of 207 mph (or 333 km an hour)

The record holder said it was very scary to ride a bike that is going 207 miles per hour.He believes that he can get to 250 mph on his next run with a little more confidence. The bike is lightweight so there's no aerodynamic curves or turns.

Its very expensive to buy and build but it runs off of half the usual helium power than It should. so in the end it will balance itself out. The best part is he will never lose a bike race again!!

Extension Symbols Blog

On the 17th of November Mr Tele'a came to extension to show us his tattoos to help us with our learning. He took his shirt off to show us the tattoos. There was one but it was a big one called the Tatau. It stretched from halfway down his back to his knees. We started to ask questions and my favourite question was What bit was your favourite part? The answer was his bellybutton because as soon as the bellybutton is tattooed the Tatau was over.

 We have been investigating tattoos for our school topic art attack. We had to draw a tattoo that meant a lot to us and a cultural tattoo. I made a Pokemon card because my friends in nelson and I loved to collect Pokemon cards and for the cultural tattoo I drew a lion because it is the national animal of Netherlands and a Maori greenstone

Explanation on tests

The next few weeks are testing weeks, most people usually hate testing  but I'm not that type of guy. I love testing, I know its weird but I can’t help it. So this is how you can prevent having a bad time at tests.

It starts the day before the test because you need a good night sleep. When you wake up have a big bowl of cereal or something for breakfast for a lot of energy and nutrition. Preparation is key if you're not prepared your brain isn’t focused.

Doing your best at a test is important because if you don’t do well your college years could be ruined. You could be in a class that is way to easy or way to hard. It could take up to 3 years to get back in the right class.

So in conclusion be prepared the day before and the day of the test to do your best. Most importantly though be future focused and you won’t end up in an easy collage, you’ll be in the right class.

This story is about someone named Fred. Fred's favourite food was sausages. He had them in his lunch, his dinner and sometimes even for breakfast. One day Fred's family ran out of sausages and they wouldn't go shopping for the rest of the week. It was Wednesday. Fred started to cry, he knew that he would survive till Sunday just not by much.

Thursday

Fred got up like usual brushed his teeth got dressed for school and when he went downstairs to have breakfast. He went to open the fridge to get a sausage to have with his PB&J sandwich and... HE REMEMBERED! His family had no sausages. So he had a big drink of milk... without a sausage. Then he packed his lunch box without a sausage and went to school.

He opened his lunchbox at lunch  and remembered he hadn't packed a sausage in his lunch because of his NSW. He sadly got his sandwich out of his lunchbox and ate it. Without the usual sausage. The rest of the day he was sad but hid it well. When the science teacher asked him what ingredients are in a sausage. He answered but his voice has hoarse. Then he went home had dinner with no sausages and went to bed.

Friday

It was not going well for Fred He went over to his friend Bobs house and asked him if he had a sausage. Bob said no but they were going shopping on Monday after school. Fred said it would be fine by then because his mum was going shopping for more sausages on Sunday. Bob knowing how hard it was for Fred tried to help him. This is hard for you isn't it? Bob asked. Fred didn't reply . Bob then thought it was the time to shut up about sausages because it was only making Fred worse.

Fred went to his first and second class. It was the same as yesterday science studying about meat and maths doing division. Then it was lunchtime. Again it was as hard for Fred eating his sandwich without a sausage.

Saturday

Fred has been complaining how hard it is for him to mum but when mum makes a decision she sticks to it. Meaning no sausages for Fred until tomorrow. He goes on the computer and plays modded Minecraft unitil night time cometh.

Sunday

Fred can't believe that its Sunday the first thing he does when mum gets up is bug her to go to the mall. She says ok but after she has a shower and gets dressed. Finally they get the sausages and mum cooks two of them for a reward for waiting for four days without sausages and Fred couldn't be happier.

Silver Scroll

The New Zealand Silver Scroll is a music award that was first held in 1965. Every year a winner is picked from New Zealand's most prominent songwriters and composers .It is in the news because it was recently awarded in Wellington on the 30 of October. Here are the last 5 years of winners.

What happens is the judges rate each song/songwriter on a scale to 1-10. The competitor with the highest score is the winner. The winner gets the award, pretty simple.

Museum Trip

On the 28 of October the year 7's went to the Auckland museum. We were split up into 9 groups all with 1 parent. Then we went on 1 of the 2 buses and they started driving to the Auckland museum where we kicked the trip off with the great "MORNING TEA"

After morning tea we got given a worksheet to draw on. We went to the Maori part first where i drew a bag that they used in the olden days. Second we went to the pacific area where i drew a knife/sword that they used. Then we got a free draw spot which I never got up to because I was adding too much detail to the worksheet. I know the thing I would've drawn a sword with shark teeth around it (for extra damage).

Then we had lunch and went out for a scavenger hunt in our groups although Francis and I went off with Francis's mum to find things and we found lots of things and at 2:00 we had to finish to get on the bus to get back to school.

Empathy Explanation

Who knows what empathy is? No one? That’s a shame. Empathy is a good thing, it’s where people are understanding of each other, meaning no fights and no one gets hurt or upset. The world would have no wars, no bombs, just kindness, if we all used empathy.

YOU TOO can be empathetic.  If you see someone crying or think they are lonely walk over to them and ask what’s wrong. After that maybe you should let them have a long talk to them & try to understand what's wrong. Trying to make them feel better by saying things that relate to what they said. You can also encourage people to show empathy.

Could you imagine the world without empathy? Empathy is important. It would be a bad world to live in. Fires everywhere, houses getting demolished, no place to live all because no one showed empathy. It would be TERRIBLE. Thats why people should use empathy because if we all use empathy everyone will get along and there would be nothing like war or a bad place to live in.

So this is why we use empathy, so we can get along and prevent fights. The next time you can use empathy it makes you a better person.

Transformations

Immersion assembly term 4

We walked into the hall on the first day. Everyone is hyped and ready to see the immersion assembly. “The theme for this term is Art Attack” Mr Burt excitedly cheered into the microphone. “Everyone yell ART ATTACK” like an echo he gets the response “ART ATTACK!!!” Team 1 was first to go on stage for their welcome back play.

The music started and the five of them went on and sat on the edge of the stage swaying to the music. All of a sudden they got up and got their buckets and boards and bumper boats. Mrs Belt started boogie-boarding, Mrs George sat in her bumper boat throwing chocolate fish, Mrs Wild

and another teacher started throwing the beach ball around, but there was one more teacher that was digging in the sand with the bucket.

The music stopped and Mrs george said into the microphone “Team 1 is very lucky because they are getting their inspiration from nature and they are going to be having a picnic someday soon by the beach.” Team 1 all of a sudden yelled “YAY!!!!” and I think some of the team 1 teachers said yay too! Meanwhile Mr Jacobson was painting a picture of the reserve.

Elections Over the Weekend

The elections on the 20th There was the election of New Zealand that happens every 4 years. Here are the turnouts.

Their were more than 2.4 million people who turned up at the election box.
My dad showed me how to vote and that the first time I will be allowed to vote will be in the 2023 election. It was  REALY SHORT drive to the election place. Not even a minute to get there. Then he showed me and the man that he had a slip of paper that allowed him to vote. Then he went to the voting booth wrote his answer and put it in the box. THAT SIMPLE. Then we went home.
